The W brand promises a number of things. Despite having hotels dotted all over the US and, increasingly, around the world, standards are always incredibly high. They may be a chain but the focus is always on comfort, luxury and design – and that’s certainly the case at their Washington DC branch. The former Washington Hotel has been given a facelift to include a new jewelled reception area and distinctive candy-striped awnings. POV, the rooftop terrace bar, boasts an almost indecently cool view of one of the world’s most iconic buildings: the White House. The venue has outdoor and indoor seating and boasts stylish contemporary design that aims to complement, rather than compete with, the dramatic skyline it looks out on. The interior is a deep, dramatic red and crowd of West Wingers congregate here in order to volley words around Aaron Sorkin-style as they sip cocktails and nibble on Asian street food-inspired bar snacks. (Food is an eclectic mix, including samosas, chili-rubbed beef skewers, and a range of sandwiches the venue also does a great Sunday brunch, complete with pitchers of mimosas). Cocktails are well made and the menu is dominated by the classics with some cute touches we’d go for the French Reception because who can go wrong with a champagne cocktail, but the rum and whisky Rock and Rye is also very tempting. There’s a reasonable selection of wines, too, and bottle service is also available. The lines can be a bit irksome but views this impressive are worth a little hassle.
