One of the top cocktail bars on Capitol Hill, Wisdom is renowned for its large selection of absinthe, thought to be the largest in the city. If the green fairy is not your favoured dancing partner, then check out the rest of the drinks list. Their signature cocktails are creative concoctions with an emphasis on gin-based drinks, unsurprising since the place has an ‘alliance’ with Philadelphia gin producer Blue Coat Gin. The pear and elderflower creation Pears (sic) of Wisdom is a refreshing antidote to the muggy DC heat and we can also see the appeal of the cool cucumber flavour of their Saketini. Prince fans might succumb to ordering a Purple Rain, while Johnny Depp lovers can indulge themselves with the absinthe-based Captain Jack’s (Green) Sparrow, or you can try the Wisdom take on the classics, such as the First We Take Manhattan or the Sophomoric Sazerac. The drinks menu has been put together with wit and care and the talented bar staff are happy to share their expertise with the clientele and guide you through the options on offer. (Bonus points, too, for a decent selection of alcohol-free ‘mocktails’ so the non-drinkers don’t feel left out of the fun). Bar snacks are available we’d go for the boozy bacon waffles, because what makes waffles better than the addition of bacon and booze? The place is lively and fun in the evenings, the music is smooth but unobtrusive and the atmosphere conducive to chatting with friends and colleagues. It’s also a popular brunch spot on a Sunday. You’d be wise (sorry!) to give it a go.
