Despite the fact that it is owned by Michael Romeo, the man behind swanky lounges like Lotus and Tattoo, a visit to the Midtown Loft is not going to inflict a huge amount of damage on your wallet. Recognizing that such exclusive and expensive venues alienate as many as they attract, particularly in these less economically stable times, this new bar has ditched the cover charge and dress code and aims to offer a relaxed and more inclusive experience to its clientele. Inside, as the name suggests, the bar is like a cool DC loft apartment, with bare brick walls and plasma screens. There’s rock music on the sound system and occasional sports screenings. Beer is the drink of choice, though there are cocktails and even bottle service if you want it, however you won’t be treated as a pariah if you don’t. There are even parlour games: fooseball and pool. The only drawback is the lack of kitchen, as a few bar snacks would have been welcome. The Loft is actually just part of a three floor ‘partyplex’ (their word, we assure you, not ours) with the Penthouse upstairs providing a space to dance while the DJ spins some tunes, and an outdoor patio that’s great on a balmy night, with the venue warmly decorated in bare brick, lots of wood and the occasional Buddha statue serenely watching the fun. The 2nd floor is more pared-back chic LED lights and monochrome giving it a cool, contemporary feel. So whatever you’re in the mood for, Midtown is the ideal destination.
