Once upon a time, the Hemingway was by way of being one of Zagreb’s most popular cocktail bars, but despite the fact that the original it is now reserved for private parties, all is not lost, for visitors to Zagreb can still discover what made the place great. The new incarnation of the Hemingway lounge bar is to be found next to the august Croatian National Theatre and what first strikes you is the lengths to which they have gone to capture the essence of the original. The effect is helped a great deal by top-notch barmen and the top-draw drinks to boot. Chief among them is the ‘Crocktail’. Awkward pun-laden name aside, it has the distinction of being Croatia’s firs cocktail. Fact. The Tourist Office says so and so it must be true. Designed by one of Hemingway’s owners, Marin Neki?, it is a startlingly red confection. The recipe is a fiercely guarded secret, but you don’t need to send a phial of the precious liquid to a lab to work out that it is made with that much-loved Croatian liqueur, Maraschino. Small wonder then that the new Hemingway is every bit as popular as its predecessor. Indeed, we at WBB would go so far as to say that the new Hemingway knocks the old Hemingway into a cocked hat. With a sophisticated air and a clientele to match, the door can be strict, but the place is worth dressing up for.
