More and more popular since Prince and Madonna graced it with their presence back in the day, Kaufleuten is the best known restaurant/bar/club in Zurich. Occupying two floors, it plays host to two bars, two clubs and a restaurant, all with a different vibe. The main bar and dance floor is all chandeliers, theatrical curtains and dramatic lighting – you know the theme. A theatre-style space hosts an impressive array of cultural events, live bands and comedy shows (as well as a monthly literature club), a banquet hall dining space is perfect for group outings and there’s a pleasant courtyard, to boot, which is particularly popular in the summer (when it can get very busy, so be sure to get there early if you want to bag a table). Club nights include Latin, hip hop, R&B and soul, as well as one-off appearances by guest DJs and promo events. It’s large, justifiably popular but may fail to give off an air of exclusivity, with the club nights in particular attracting an unpretentious ‘here to party’ crowd. That said, the ‘Lounge’, with lots of comfy cushioned wooden chairs and paintings lying around, is possibly the best spot in town, and tends to attract a more laid back, thirtysomething clientele who blend in well with their stylish surroundings. The restaurant serves a tempting menu of seasonal, often organic and locally sourced food complemented by an extensive wine list and it’s also a popular choice for corporate events with clients who want to take advantage of such an eclectic space.
