Club Diagonal or ‘Digi’ as it’s known locally is part of the luxury Hotel Baur au Lac, one of the oldest family run hotels in Zurich, which is situated right on the lake in its own private park. Founded nearly 40 years ago, the hotel and club have been recently refurbished and while the hotel rooms are lavishly furnished (and have amazing views) the club comes across as a little 80s lots of dark blue and low lighting. This new lease of life has also influenced the door policy and the club is private members only, (but you can get round that if you’re staying at the hotel.) The crowd is definitely from the nicer end of the gene pool (or, at least, the more financially blessed) and as well as idling over a few long drinks, if you want to really shake your thang head there for the last Thursday each month, when local and national DJs liven up the mix. Should you find it all a little too much, the hotel offers plenty of other amenities, such as the light and airy Le Hall, which is a perfect spot for a quiet evening drink or a coffee through the day, or three restaurants. The gourmet Pavilion is fairly upscale, while the more casual (and, to our eyes, more stylish) Rive Gauche looks out over the city and so feels a little more cosmopolitan, or head to Terrasse, which overlooks the park. If you’re heading to Club Diagonal, be warned, the dress code is ‘elegant’ slackers and slobs are strictly not welcome.
