When the weather outside is frightful, hot cocktails are so delightful…
Warm wool socks? Check. Cozy PJs? Check. A roaring fireplace and a great book? Check and check. All you need now is one of these 3 deliciously comforting hot cocktails and you’ll be all good to let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
Apple Cider Caramel Hot Toddy
In a small saucepan, bring 1/3 cup apple cider to a simmer. Combine 1 1/2 oz. bourbon, 1 tbsp. caramel and 2 tsp. lemon juice in a mug, pour over the hot cider and stir to combine. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a slice of lemon and enjoy.
Slow Cooker Mulled Wine
Combine 1 bottle of a dry, full-bodied red wine, 1 cup apple cider, 1 cup cranberry juice, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 cup fresh cranberries, the juice from 2 oranges and the peel from 1 (reserve the other for garnish), 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 tbsp. cloves and 1 tbsp. star anise in a slow cooker. Stir to combine and cook on high for about 30 minutes. Serve warm and garnish each glass with an orange peel.
Spiked Hot Cocoa
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 3 tbsp. cocoa powder with 1/4 cup milk (or oat milk) and whisk until integrated. Whisk in another 1 3/4 cup of milk (that’s 2 in total) until smooth. Add 3 tbsp. sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 pinch cinnamon, 1/4 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips, and continue whisking over medium heat until the chocolate is melted — about 2 minutes — without bringing to a boil. Stir in 2 oz of your alcohol of choice between aged or dark rum, bourbon, or Baileys, or 1 1/2 oz Creme de Menthe or peppermint schnapps. Garnish with whipped cream, marshmallows or both, and serve immediately.
