If you like your nightlife to be original and eclectic, then you need to try a night out in Budapest. The Hungarian capital has rapidly become a favourite city-break destination, and given its unpretentious, quirky and inventive nightspots, we can see why.

Bars in Budapest

Our favourites are the ruin bars found in the old District VII area. The city’s tumultuous past resulted in abandoned buildings throughout the city. The ever-inventive young locals have used these spaces to create an amazing underground bar scene quite unlike any other. For this reason, a visit to the original ruin bar Szimpla Kert is a must.

If the ruin bar scene doesn’t do it for you, worry not; there are plenty of other genres of bars to visit. There are the ultra-hip student-friendly bars like Morrison’s 2 with its red phone box and wallet-friendly offers. For an experience like no other, why not order a martini on the A38, a retired Ukrainian warship turned floating cultural hub replete with a restaurant and bar and frequent live music events? Or try the brilliantly named Hotsy Totsy: a barber shop by day, outstanding cocktail basement bar by night. A night out in Budapest does not fail to be an eye-opener!
