Nightlife in Vienna has a strong electronic streak and with good reason: the city has exported house music to international acclaim for years. Here’s how to work your way through the scene that gave birth to those beats.

Nightlife in Vienna: Austrian capital of electro cool

When it comes to bars in Vienna, the party is often in the most unsuspecting places. The Danube is one such nightlife haven, with clubs including Werk, Flex and Grelle Forelle. Try Clubschiff, too, a boat venue on the canal. Meanwhile, the arches of the old Stadtbahn railway now host nightlife staples including B72 and Rhiz. Breathing pulsing new life into a disused underpass, Passage is another intriguing spot.

Cafes that metamorphose in clubs at night are also common in Vienna. The hundred-year-old Café Dreschler creates a chic cocktail scene on Thursday and Friday evenings, while Club U inside the Otto Wagner Pavilion serves up cut-price drinks and house from 10 PM.

For a jazzier soundtrack, there’s Puff, a strip club reborn as a seriously chic speakeasy. But the most eyebrow-raising venue has to be a cult spot the Pratersauna. Once a sauna complete with plunge pool, it’s now several floors of thundering techno and electro.

Long-known for its famous waltz, the Austrian capital’s electro cool makes its modern dancefloors equally iconic.
