How to make BlackTail’s signature cocktail: The Nacional

“The Nacional cocktail has been a staple of our program at BlackTail since day one,” says bartender Jesse Vida.

The complex yet fruity rum-based drink is, in fact, the first drink Vida finalised on BlackTail’s first edition menu and sipping a Nacional while looking out at the Manhattan Sound has become nearly synonymous with a visit to BlackTail at lower Manhattan’s Pier A. “This is an iconic Cuban cocktail, named after and created at the Hotel Nacional in Havana Cuba,” Vida explains. “We do a modern adaptation on the classic layering it with Yuzu and Gentian.” Whether you’re trying to unpack what the rainbow of flavours in your punch glass are, or can’t wait to recreate the signature drink at home, Vida shared the recipe for his twist on the updated classic.

The Nacional

  • 0.75oz Lime Juice
  • 0.5oz Pineapple Juice
  • 0.5oz Yuzu Syrup
  • 0.25oz Banana Syrup
  • 0.75 oz Nacional Biz
  • 0.25oz Banana Liqueur
  • 0.25oz Suze Gentiane
  • 0.25oz Apricot Eau de Vie
  • 2 oz Diplomatico Blanco Rum

Shake all ingredients. Serve in a punch glass with a block of ice. Garnish with nutmeg. Cuban music while you sip optional, but encouraged.
