Maxim Schulte Beefeaters MIXLDN 7
The hotly anticipated and oh-so-exciting industry event Beefeater MIXLDN has, as of the 8th February, finished its seventh run and named the world’s greatest bartender of 2018, Maxim Schulte.

The competition saw 31 contestants fly from across the globe to compete in the four-day event held at The Bike Shed in Shoreditch, London. The judging panel was made up of an all-star cocktail cast that included Beefeater’s own Master Distiller Desmond – The Godfather of Gin – Payne, the one and only Simon Difford of Difford’s Guide, Ryan Chetiyawardana of Dandelyan and Alessandro Palazzi of Dukes, Mayfair.

Fighting tooth and nail (or at least jigger and shaker) next to industry favourites Alexander Walker (The Beaufort Bar, London), Ziyu Zhang (Beijing’s, The Peninsula) and Jónmundur Borsteinsson (Iceland’s, Apotek Restaurant), Maxim Schulte rose to prominence and did Hong Kong and Macau proud with his playful and winning cocktail, Stack of Fortune.

Contestants were tasked to create a cocktail that best represented their city’s urban diversity. Schulte has said that the inspiration for Stack of Fortune came from Macau’s reputation of being the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’ and charmingly commented that “it’s certainly brought me good luck.” He also said that winning has been the “highlight of my career”.

Schulte’s lucky swizzle blends Beefeater 24 (the brand’s superior gin that infuses Japanese green tea during the distillation process), fresh lime, white Crème de Cacao, homemade bitter orange blossom sherbet, orange bitters, fresh mint and Blue Butterfly pea soda.

What’s next for Schulte? Well, aside from enjoying the glory and swagger that goes along with being named the best cocktail bartender in the world, he’ll also embark on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create his very own gin under the supervision of industry icon Desmond Payne.

Schulte has said that he’s, “got some ideas up my sleeve for my limited-edition gin and I’m looking forward to being able to learn from a legend like Desmond Payne.” We bet!

The assuredly delicious final product will be displayed at the Beefeater Distillery in Kennington, so that visitors from all over the world can both sample and purchase it.
