It’s safe to say that we’ve all spent some time dreaming about being a Hollywood star in our day. While most of us are still waiting for our big break, the good news is that there’s nothing stopping us from playing the part of a star at one of Los Angeles’ ridiculously cool rooftop bars. We partnered up with Expedia to bring you the best rooftop bars in LA - find out all about them...
A good rooftop bar is the rock star of any city’s social circuit, and in LA, with its magical combination of idyllic climate and overabundance of glamour in the air, they are catapulted to the stratosphere of the A-List. We don’t think any trip to the city is complete until you’ve gone to at least one of them, and here are a few of our favourites, all perfect for shooting your own unforgettable scene.
Upstairs Bar at Ace Hotel
Declaring that they are “open everyday, for everyone”, downtown LA’s Upstairs Bar at Ace Hotel is, in fact, only for those type of people who love fantastic cocktails poured poolside in a striking setting. Okay, they’re right; that is pretty much everyone. This rooftop gem sits atop a stunning Spanish Gothic architectural gem, and is home to a cool desert-inspired color scheme (think greens and browns), tapestries, and chunky wooden tables. The star of the show though is the pool, and even though it’s on the small side, seeing it sparkle in the midday sun or watching city lights bounce off of it at night more than make up for the lack of size.
What to raise on the roof: The Hollywood & Vine - vodka, cooling cucumber, lemon, honey, and lavender topped with ginger beer.
Emigrating from Europe with love, this boutique hotel chain’s rooftop space is currently setting the LA’s rooftop scene ablaze - in the most chilled-out of ways possible. A kaleidoscope of comfy striped couches, pastel chairs, and palms set a Mediterranean ‘beach shack’ feel, and the sunny food and drinks follow suit. The vibe here is definitely relaxed, as Mama’s ethos is diametrically opposed to stress and/or high altitude attitudes. The cocktails, bubbles, and sharing pitchers will keep you smiling from noon to night and if you even think of slipping out of vacation mode for a second here, there’s a foosball table and a viewfinder fixed on the iconic Hollywood sign to reign you back in.
What to raise on the roof: The Midnight Run - premium vodka or gin, cucumber, mint, French elderflower liqueur, and refreshing rose water.
The Rooftop at the Standard Hotel Downtown
Truly befitting the hotel’s name, this elevated bar and party pool has quickly become the bearer of standards in the LA rooftop game. Home to a shimmering swimming pool, crimson astroturf, and with space-age waterbed pods parked poolside, the party definitely gets cranking here. For those that may want a bit more of a laid back vibe with their rooftop libations, The Standard has also installed an authentic German beer garden (pretzel as big as your head, anyone?) serving beer and fare direct from Deutschland.
What to raise on the roof: The El Premio - reposado tequila infused with thyme, mezcal, peach, lime, and bubbles.
High Rooftop Lounge
If you prefer beach scenes to those set on city streets, then Venice Beach’s High Rooftop Lounge is just the place for you. High happens to be the only rooftop bar in this bohemian town, and it is home to both delectable drinks and priceless views of the Pacific Ocean. High features funky floors made of boardwalk-esque wooden planks, sharp nautical-striped couches, and naturally, a menu full of refreshing cocktails meant to pair perfectly with the sea breezes.
What to raise on the roof: The Ocean Breeze - blanco tequila, jalapeno, puree of guava, and fresh lime.
Set in the sky amongst the skyscrapers of downtown, Perch is both a breath of fresh French air for the urban center of the city and a center for craft cocktails. Parisian in persuasion, Perch effortlessly blends a sophisticated design (think intricate colorful tiles, twinkling lights, and ivy) with sweeping views of LA landmarks from its 15th and 16th floor - or should that be perch? These views include, but are certainly not limited to, the Art Deco gem that is the Los Angeles Central Library and Pershing Square. Jazz can often be heard wafting through the air at Perch (only serving to reinforce the refinement) and the cocktails and food are quite simply magnifique.
What to raise on the roof: The Midnight in Paris - cognac, premium vodka, and refreshing crème de peche.
