pegu club
An ode to the gin-centric Victorian gentleman’s clubs of centuries past, Pegu Club’s namesake drink is a citrusy gin sour popular with martini lovers and fruit-forward mixed drink lovers alike.

Served straight up, the transparent cocktail is deceivingly simple, as it packs in complex notes of several types of citrus, as well as bitters that play nicely off the acidity. Invented in the 1900s at the original Pegu Club in Myanmar, the NYC-based Pegu Club’s version mixes London Dry gin, Angostura bitters, orange bitters, orange curaçao and fresh lime juice.

While recreating The Pegu Club’s perfected Pegu Club cocktail may be a challenge for those who don’t have tenure behind the legendary wooden bar, riffing on your own at home is worth a shot. Follow this formula to shake up your own Pegu Club and, who knows, you may become a mixology legend.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. gin (Pegu Club uses London Dry)
  • 0.75 oz orange curaçao
  • 0.75 oz lime juice
  • 1-2 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1-2 dashes orange bitters
  • Lime wheel, wedge or peel for garnish

Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a chilled coup. Garnish. Then head to The Pegu Club to see who mixed it better.
