Going out for drinks is among the most ‘Instagram-able’ of pastimes; showing off beautifully crafted cocktails and top-notch drinking spots has become a priority for today’s trendsetters. With the bars we visit and our Insta grids alike benefiting from the perfect snap, it’s only right that we share some of our best tips for achieving that wow factor. That way, everyone gets a bite of the cherry.
Get well lit
As all photographers know, lighting is key when it comes to getting an impressive shot. Bars generally aren’t known for being particularly well lit, but there are a few things that you can do to shed a bit of light on the situation. When trying to find a seat, look for the brightest areas and if all else fails, stay close to the bar – that’s usually the most illuminated spot. Also, try to avoid using the flash; otherwise you’ll end up with a flat, distorted image that won’t show off the concoction in all its glory.
Snap before you sip
One thing that’s hard to remember when you’re excited to try a new cocktail is to photograph it before you take the first sip. A simple trick, this will ensure that you’ll capture it just as the bartender intended.
Composition is king
Apart from lighting, composition is one of the most important aspects of photography. Before capturing the moment, make sure to clear any empty bottles, glasses or lurkers from the background of your shot. You could also consider employing the rule of thirds to balance things out (imagine that the image is divided into 9 pieces, this will help you to identify the most important parts as you frame it) – you’ll be surprised what a difference it makes.
When all is said and done, cocktails are made to be enjoyed, so don’t take things too seriously. Grab your phone, free up some memory and get Instagramming!
