Is it getting hot in here or is it just us? To finish the month of love strong, allow us to introduce you to a traditional Brazilian beverage with unique properties, Catuaba.
A sweet and heady concoction of red wine, fermented apple juice, catuaba — an aphrodisiac plant from the North of Brazil — and other local plants like guarana, and marapuama, Catuaba is the Brazilian love potion, and one of the country’s oldest and most popular liquors.
It is usually enjoyed on its own over ice with a lemon or lime garnish, but it can also be used as replacement to spice up classic drinks.
Here are a few examples to get you inspired.
Catuaba & Tonic
Simply mix three parts of Catuaba for each part of tonic water – it doesn’t get any simpler than that. Garnish with your citrus fruit of choice, such as lemon or orange, and you’re done.
To prepare this riff on Brazil’s favorite cocktail, start by making a classic Caipirinha (lime, sugar, ice), and swap the cachaça for Catuaba at the end.
All you need to do is replace the wine in the original Sangria recipe with Catuaba. Just chop the fruits of your choice and let them macerate in a pitcher with your Catuaba, orange juice, soda, liqueur, and plenty of ice.
